Wests buy Market Square building for new venture | Property Scope

Scott and Bernadette West have purchased a building on Market Square, and are planning to launch a new events venue.

The Wests paid $275,000 for 32 Market Square, and are preparing a venture called Scruffy City Hall.

Scott West said the idea is to create an events space for Preservation Pub, which will allow established bands to charge higher prices for tickets and can accommodate private parties.

West described a layout in which drink rails would be deployed for concerts, while the rails would disappear for other events and be replaced by tables that fold out from the wall. He also said a long, central table might be lowered from the center of the ceiling for events that need the seating.

West said that over the years, bands would sometimes say they'd like to charge $10 a ticket to perform at Preservation Pub. "And we'll have to say, 'This is not a listening room, it's not an events space, it's a pub. We have lots and lots of regulars, many of them are musicians and poor. So lots of people who come in here don't pay to see your band.'"

The building is currently occupied by retail store Swagger, and West said the initial plan was to allow them to remain until their lease ran out at the end of next year. But he said the store's owner has decided to close Swagger within the next few weeks.

Where is this convicted drug felon getting the money to do this? Repeat, CONVICTED DRUG FELON.

It was marijuana and NOBODY CARES! Repeat, NOBODY CARES!

Victims do, widows and children of law enforcement do, destroyed families do, taxpayers do...just to name a few.

Ugh. Mr. DEA, have you been to Market Square lately? Do you enjoy the liveliness of downtown? Market Square is what it is today because of and thanks to the Wests. Convicted of whatever, who cares? *He served his time, so let it go.* Nobody can deny that Scott & Bernadette brought about the revolution of Market Square and began the revitalization of downtown Knoxville. I applaud their continued efforts to bring new life and worthwhile ventures to the heart of downtown.

Where did Citibank and the other some odd banks get the money to stay in business? Who cares? Victims of illegal foreclosures (which includes widows of U.S. Service Personnel) destroyed families do. People make laws, laws get broken, people get hurt regardless. People get arrested, do their time and try to go back into society, despite the stigma. I was in the service. Got in trouble with "the law". A very few of the people I came in contact with had some respect and honor. The vast majority didn't and then wonder why people go back out and break the law.

Big deal that the West's are back on the block. They paid their way, regardless of what DEA thinks. The DEA is the subject for another diatribe some other time.

Yea, nobody cares. Great people with the best bar in town already! Can't wait for this new venture. These people single handedly revitalized the market square area and in turn downtown as a whole.

DEA is worried about tax payers, yea right. If that were the case they would try to end this failed drug war and save us all a great deal of money. O yea that's right with out the ability to arrest and seize property thay would be out of a job. Get a life DEA. Your sad and I feel sorry for you. Congrats Scott and Bernadette West most sane people are behind you.

they are total scum bags and i guess the feds let them keep a bunch of their blood moneyand don't tell me it's only pot they were bringing it up from mexicowhere people are slaughtered daily in the drug wars. screw the wests

While everyone may want to debate the Wests or the drug war, it's interesting to consider the impact on Market Square. I have mixed feelings. On the one hand I expect it to be a great entertainment venue and I'll probably go there. On the other hand, we lose a shoe store and a cleaner/tailor. I know the one coming is sexier, but in terms of making downtown a viable city, I'm not sure it's a good trade. It also weights the Square particularly more toward food and entertainment. I'm planning to blog about it tomorrow at my blog about downtown living at http://www.stuckinsideofknoxville.blogspot.com. Visit if it sounds like something you might like to read. Otherwise, carry on with your West/Drug War discussion.
